A client who engages in therapy with me can expect the following:
- That you are not required to have any experience with art or any artistic skill whatsoever
- Any mark, scribble, smudge, rip, tear, splash, squish, thump is useful in art therapy
- That art can assist you to express things that are stuck inside
- Art can help when you cannot use words
- The process is the focus, not the final product
- Metaphors will often come up through the use of art as therapy
- Sometimes the issues that come up through the art making can be overwhelming; my role is to assist you to work through these
- Art therapy can help you face your issues, transform them and, ultimately, heal
- You can use a range of art materials, from pencils, pastels, textas, paint, clay, and other craft/art materials
- You will receive a respectful service that honours your own interpretations of the art process and product. I will guide you through the process and asks questions as required but I will not interpret your creations
- Art therapy can be used to treat problems or can be used for relaxation, to relieve stress, or for self-discovery. Clarify your needs when negotiating your therapy plan
